Meet St. John’s “Barefoot Minister” – Anne Marie Porter

Weddings on the beach have become a dream-come-true for more and more couples. Additionally, husbands and wives frequently take advantage of tropical vacations to renew their vows in paradise. On the island of St. John – a.k.a “Love City” – one of the most celebrated connections to those dreams is Anne Marie Porter. A resident for more than three decades, she garnered the title “Barefoot Minister” for officiating at hundreds of seaside ceremonies – from intimate nuptials to gala gatherings.

Today, Anne Marie is available to assist the bride and groom with everything from applying for a U.S. Virgin Islands marriage license to choosing the perfect beach venue. A multi-denominational, interfaith wedding officiant, the “Barefoot Minister” is renowned for customizing each ceremony. Additionally, she is uniquely positioned to connect couples with local resources ranging from photographer to florist, musicians, catering services, transportation, accommodations, and more.

Valentine’s Day has always been a favorite time for couples to visit St. John. For that reason, 16 years ago Anne Marie decided to enhance the enchanting experience by providing a group ‘vow renewal ceremony’ at Trunk Bay. The sunset tradition continued — until this year.

Due to the pandemic, the 2021 event will not take place. However, keep in mind Anne Marie remains available for individualized services and celebrations. During this month of love, why not renew your vows in Love City, St. John? What a romantic experience! Although the popular Valentine’s Day group vow renewal is canceled due to COVID-19, an intimate service can be arranged with Anne Marie Porter.

The Barefoot Minister specializes in beach weddings and vow renewals, custom designed to please couples – and family members. For additional information call her at 340-626-4658.

A 2019 US News and World Report – “Why Go To U.S. Virgin Islands “

The U.S. Virgin Islands are “America’s Caribbean Paradise” — the place to see moko jumbies dance at a Carnival parade, hear the lilting patois of a Creole dialect or smell the spices in a saltfish pate (all without losing cell phone reception). You can visit either St. Thomas, St. John or St. Croix, or better yet, spend a little time on all three islands. That way you’ll get plenty of pampering, undisturbed nature and colonial history jammed into one vacation. And bonus: you can pay for everything with U.S. dollars.

Each island offers something different. Called “Rock City” for its hilly, craggy horizon, St. Thomas is known for luxury — from the mega-yachts moored in the harbor to the high-end storefronts along Main Street. Located a short ferry-ride east, St. John appeals to honeymooners and nature lovers, with more than 7,000 acres of dedicated parkland plus surrounding pristine beaches. Way down south in the Caribbean Sea, less-visited St. Croix has sugar cane plantations and rum distilleries that offer a glimpse into both the past and the present of the Virgin Islands.

"Dear Anne Marie,
Thank you for our wonderful beach wedding ceremony. The words you spoke were absolutely perfect for us. The place, your words, our friends and family, are such a special memory to hold for the rest of our lives. Also thank you for your help in finding great people to assist in other aspects of the ceremony. Yelena was amazing in her ability to bring out the love and energy for the photographs. Susan created beautiful flower arrangements with local island flowers. La Tapa was a unique experience in dining that everyone raved about. Liz did a great job on the cake with a sailboat topper and design to our wishes. Hamilton's taxi carried all of us and he was very professional.
Happily married and thanking you for your love and guidance,"

TripAdvisor lists St. John as a top honeymoon destination
By United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism
July 28, 2017

The highly influential TripAdvisor travel review site listed has listed St. John as one of the
“15 Best Honeymoon Destinations in the United States”, according to the territory’s
Department of Tourism.

The 15 destinations were chosen by an algorithm that analyzed all of the property reviews on TripAdvisor Rentals to select the honeymoon destinations that have the highest-rated rental accommodations, according to D.O.T. St. John, in particular, was praised for its “world-class beaches, unspoiled forest and blissful solitude”.

TripAdvisor Rentals is the vacation rentals branch of TripAdvisor. Rental properties include beach houses, ski cabins, private islands, treehouses and downtown apartments.

Known as “Love City”, St. John’s isolation is an attraction for honeymooners. According to TripAdvisor, “this secluded destination has no airport or cruise ship dock … to reach this side of paradise, fly into neighboring St. Thomas and hop on the public ferry (or splurge on a private water taxi).”

Two-thirds of the island is part of the Virgin Islands National Park, which in addition to the hiking trails, hills, valleys and beaches on land, also encompasses thousands of acres underwater. St. John’s pristine waters offer honeymooners the option to snorkel, scuba dive or participate in water sports activities.

“You’ll be lounging on Honeymoon Beach, hiking the Reef Bay Trail, or snorkeling at Trunk Bay in no time. Later, you might find yourself shopping in Coral Bay or enjoying the nightlife in Cruz Bay before returning to your tropical retreat or clifftop villa rental,” TripAdvisor relayed.

“It’s great to see the U.S. Virgin Islands positioned among the top honeymoon destinations across the nation,” Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty said. “We would like to thank all our visitors who wrote and continue to write reviews online and share their experiences with this online community of global travelers.”

An added incentive for U.S. citizens is the fact they do not need a passport to visit the USVI. Also, with $1,600 in duty-free allowances for U.S. residents, visitors and honeymooners can enjoy some extra shopping.

TripAdvisor, one of the world’s largest travel sites, enables travelers to unleash the full potential of every trip. With more than 500 million reviews and opinions covering the world’s largest selection of travel listings worldwide – more than seven million accommodations, airlines, attractions and restaurants – TripAdvisor provides travelers with the “wisdom of the crowds” to help them decide where to stay, how to fly, what to do and where to eat.
